The Greater Williamsburg Chamber and Tourism Alliance selected Thomas Tingle, President of Guernsey Tingle Architects, as the 2013 Small Business Person of the Year at its annual Membership Meeting on September 25, 2012.
The Chamber & Tourism Alliance recognizes the significant role small businesses play in our economy and annually selects a Small Business Person of the Year. Small Business owners are selected for their impact on the community and substantial employee growth, increased sales, excellent customer service, and response to adversity. Presenting the award was Ken Carr, who went on to say. “This year’s small business person of the year represents the finest qualities of a small business owner”.
Guernsey Tingle Architects is approaching its 30th anniversary. During these years, the staff has expanded from 4 employees in 1992 to the current staff of 20. The firm has sustained substantial growth, with over a four-fold increase in income between 1991 and 2001, and a three-fold increase from 2001 through 2011 with a great portion of the income being “recycled” in the community. To sustain growth in this challenging economy, the firm developed a business strategy of building relationships in diversified markets. The business has received 36 design awards and recognition for its work, and numerous features and articles in national, regional, and state magazines.
Thomas Tingle is actively involved in many local government, community and civic organizations in James City County and throughout Hampton Roads and Virginia. He currently serves on the James City County Economic Development Authority, the Newport News/Williamsburg Airport-RAISE Committee, and Co-Chairs the Virginians for High Speed Rail. He is a board member of the Peninsula Council for Workforce Development, Housing Partnerships and the Peninsula Metropolitan YMCA.
